Hill, 1900 1900 Presumed First Edition Hard Cover Good No Jacket 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall Denslow, W.W. Hard Cover. No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 1899 and 1900 These two books, from the same estate sale, are tied together in a unique way.The first book, Father Goose, His Book by L. Frank Baum with pictures by W.W. Denslow, and hand etched text by Ralph Fletcher Seymour, is copyright 1899, marked 6th edition (which may have meant printing in those days) published by Bobbs Merrill. Baum calls it "updated for children of today" and the first poem says Mother Goose joined a Woman's club so Father Goose had to do the story telling for the goslings. The book is in good condition with edge and corner wear to covers and text pages. The front hinge is gone but the spine cover holds it all together. Contents are clean and bright with just a couple of little fingerprints. The second book is The Songs Of Father Goose For the Kindergarten, the Nursery and the Home by L. Frank Baum with pictures by W. W. Denslow and music by Alberta N. Hall, published by George M. Hill Company. It is copyright 1900 and is a presumed first edition as no other dates are given. In it, Baum has set to music many of the poems from the first book. The book is also in good condition, althoght the spine cover is gone, and both boards are loose. There is wear to the page edges and all edges of the cover. Contents are very good. Inside the Songs book, is taped a 1950 newspaper article about how the etcher of the text in the Father Goose book (Ralph Fletcher Seymour), and a lady who discovered she was his neighbor, and took the book over for him to see after 25 years. The estate holder who owned these books also glued in an envelope and note from his Great Grandmother. She says tried to locate the etcher and the lady named in the clipping, but could not. She also says that her son Casey was given the first book by an uncle. He got the second book the next year when it came out (in 1900) He loved the poems and the music for the poems in the second book. But she had to write music for the George Washington poem (since Baum had thoughtlessly left out the poem that was her son's favorite) and stuck it in the back of the book. She was sending the Songs of Father Goose and the original music to the George Washington poem, to her great grandson. She told him to look in his mother's things for the first book. Apparently he did. When the great grandson died without children, the books were sold in 2000. Four generations of this family had these books for 100 years.
